SK Telecom Targets Defense Market with Drone Communication Relay Partnerships
SK Telecom is set to make a significant foray into the defense market. To expand the operational range of military drones, the company has partnered with four domestic defense companies: Funjin, Conan Technology, Contela, and Flacktory. On the 15th, SK Telecom announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the development of communication relay drones.
Communication relay drones act as intermediaries that facilitate wireless communication, allowing reconnaissance and attack drones to extend their operational range in areas where communication is challenging.
Currently, the military is implementing communication relay drones using the IUM 5G frequency. However, the high-frequency bands used have limited the operational range. According to SK Telecom, the communication relay drones developed by the partner companies will employ commercial network frequencies. This approach aims to expand the range of signal transmission and ensure robust diffraction capabilities, allowing stable operations even in urban environments with many obstacles.
The technology for handover between communication relay drones will also be applied in this development. By operating multiple relay drones in succession, the reliability of the system can be improved. Even if one communication relay drone is shot down, the reconnaissance or attack drone can connect to another relay drone.
The participating companies will contribute core technologies from their respective areas of expertise. SK Telecom will handle wireless circuits, handover technology, and real-time video monitoring. By combining low-frequency bands capable of long-distance transmission with the real-time video monitoring system, T-LiveCaster, operational drones will be able to transmit real-time video to the rear drone pilot.
Defense-focused AI specialist Funjin will be responsible for measuring drone wireless quality and providing AI technology, while Conan Technology will collaborate through edge tactical equipment. Contela, a mobile communication equipment provider, will offer satellite communication-based mobile base stations, and Flacktory, specializing in 5G networks, will supply mini-PC-based IUM 5G core and communication equipment.
