Recent reports indicate a growing trend of discomfort experienced by tourists in South Korea. Complaints regarding unfriendly service from merchants and exorbitant prices deemed unreasonable have become common. Concerns have been raised within the tourism industry that beyond individual problematic establishments, entire regions could be branded as rip-off tourist destinations, which could ultimately lead to a decrease in visitor numbers.

As of December 12, industry sources reveal that issues such as unfriendliness and overpricing at tourist attractions are significant factors lowering visitor satisfaction. A survey conducted by the Korea Economic Association found that the top policy recommended for promoting domestic travel is the strengthening of institutional management to prevent overpricing (35.6%). Furthermore, the primary reason cited for the dissatisfaction with domestic travel compared to international travel is high prices at tourist sites (45.1%).

The so-called quick profit mentality during peak seasons and long holidays has created a negative perception of domestic travel preferences. It has become so prevalent that there are claims of individuals experiencing overpriced services domestically opting to travel abroad instead. Each time issues arise, local governments and merchant associations promise to prevent recurrence, yet controversies continue to surface.

A recent incident in Sokcho involved a seafood market where customers were charged over 100,000 won more than the actual order amount, sparking outrage. This followed previous complaints about unkind service from squid vendors in Sokcho that went viral on YouTube, leading to a public outcry. Notably, it has been less than a month since merchants issued an apology for their behavior.

In Ulleungdo, a restaurant faced backlash for selling pork belly that was half fat while claiming it was different from regular meat to tourists. In Busans Jagalchi Market, a raw fish restaurant attempted to sell sea cucumbers at an inflated price of 70,000 won, which was marked as market price.

The ongoing issues surrounding unfriendliness and inflated prices threaten to tarnish the reputation of South Koreas tourism industry. Without substantial changes and accountability, there is a risk that potential visitors may choose to avoid domestic destinations in favor of more predictable and enjoyable experiences abroad.
