APEC Summit in Gyeongju: A Cultural Showcase of Sillas Heritage
Throughout the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit, Gyeongju offers a variety of outdoor attractions that highlight the regions rich cultural heritage. The area around Cheomseongdae will transform into a vibrant performance space celebrating the artistic spirit of the Silla dynasty.
The Cultural Heritage Administration and the city of Gyeongju have organized a media facade performance that will run until the 1st of next month, following the conclusion of the APEC summit. This innovative display will utilize the entire exterior of Cheomseongdae as a screen, showcasing not only the golden culture of Silla but also its astronomical achievements through nighttime projections. The visuals include scenes of Silla astronomers observing the stars and breathtaking views of the Milky Way. The performance will also feature the Cheonsangyeolcha Bunyajido, a celestial chart from the Joseon dynasty, and other artworks that vividly illustrate Koreas rich history in astronomy.
On the 25th, the performance titled Seorabeol Pungnyu - Towards Dreams and the Future will take place at Cheomseongdae. This event reinterprets the spirit of the Silla flower knights through art. Notable performers include Namchangdong, a master tightrope walker recognized as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage bearer, who will showcase his breathtaking skills, while singer Kim Soo-in will express the courage of the flower knights through pansori (traditional Korean narrative singing) and gayageum (a traditional Korean string instrument) performance. Audiences will also be treated to a new interpretation of the legendary song Changgiparangga. The dance group K-Tigers will present a combination of dance and taekwondo demonstrations, featuring choreography by Ha Seong-jin, associated with the animation K-Pop Demon Hunters and its boy group Lion Boys.
A royal court music and dance event is also set to captivate visitors from around the world. On the 27th, Yunghyeondang in History: Celebrating the Ritual of Yunghyeondang will unfold around Cheomseongdae. This event commemorates the 40th birthday of Queen Sunwon, the mother of Crown Prince Hyomyeong, through traditional music and dance performances. The Gyeongju Bomun Tourist Complex will serve as a multimedia show stage until the 2nd of next month, featuring dazzling drone lights reflecting the moonlight on Bomun Lake and lasers tracing long streaks across the sky like shooting stars.
