Korean National Assembly Hearing Marred by Controversy Surrounding Chairwoman Choi Min-hee

The National Assemblys Science, Technology, Information and Communications Committee hearing on the 23rd was overshadowed by controversy involving Chairwoman Choi Min-hee. Members of the People Power Party raised renewed suspicions regarding Chois daughter’s wedding during the hearing, as well as questioning Chois statements protesting a report by MBC.
During the hearing, allegations surfaced that Choi had requested a flower wreath from the Korea Communications Commission (now the Korea Broadcasting and Media Communications Commission) for her daughters wedding. This claim directly contradicted Chois earlier assertions that she had no involvement in her daughters wedding planning.
Representative Kim Jang-gyeom from the People Power Party stated in the meeting, "I received contact from former KCC Chairman Lee Jin-sook. She clearly mentioned that there was contact from Choi Min-hees office." Kim then disclosed details from a conversation between Lee and a KCC employee.
According to Kim, the KCC employee had said, "There is a wedding for Chairwoman Chois daughter, please send a flower wreath. It’s a customary gesture." To this, Lee reportedly responded, "Given my relationship with Choi Min-hee (which is not good), do we really need to send one?" The employee then replied, "Actually, contact came from Choi Min-hees office requesting it to be sent." Subsequently, after the bill for establishing the Korea Broadcasting and Media Communications Commission was passed, Lee directed that "any wreath sent in my name be canceled and not sent."
In response to this controversy, Kim Hyun, the ruling partys secretary of the committee, remarked, "This is not a hearing against Chairwoman Choi, nor is it a national audit against her. I hope that Chairwoman Choi will refrain from making a statement for the smooth progress of the meeting." Members of the People Power Party demanded all documentation regarding whether the Korea Communications Commission and related agencies provided flower wreaths or congratulatory money for Chois daughters wedding. When their requests were not granted, tensions escalated in the meeting room, leading to heated exchanges among members.
