Seoul Education Superintendent Jeong Geun-sik Outlines Long-term Direction on First Anniversary

On the occasion of his first anniversary in office, Jeong Geun-sik, the Superintendent of Seoul Education, presented a long-term vision for education in the capital. He emphasized the need for a transition to absolute evaluation for college entrance exams and the importance of securing an adequate number of teachers while establishing a collaborative education governance system.
During a press briefing held in Sajik-dong, Seoul on the 23rd, Superintendent Jeong stated, "Relative evaluation creates a structure that turns students into competitors rather than friends." He asserted that to alleviate such issues, it is essential to switch to absolute evaluation. However, he also cautioned that such a change could potentially favor specialized high schools and private high schools, highlighting the need to discuss solutions to alleviate this structural imbalance.
Emphasizing the importance of securing a sufficient number of teachers for future education, Jeong remarked, "It is a misguided approach to reduce the number of teachers solely based on declining student enrollment." He stressed that various factors should be considered when determining teacher staffing, including students learning levels, the expansion of special schools, support for multicultural students, and the burden of administrative tasks.
In terms of educational policy implementation, he announced plans to establish a collaborative governance system that includes the Ministry of Education, the National Education Commission, and the 17 regional education offices. Jeong stated, "In this process, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will play a central role to ensure that policies are effectively implemented in the field."
Regarding the protection of teachers political basic rights, he noted, "In a democratic society, the freedom of expression and political basic rights of teachers must be guaranteed." However, he also mentioned the necessity of an autonomous control system within the teaching community to maintain neutrality in educational environments.
Reflecting on the achievements of the past year, Jeong highlighted the importance of ensuring student safety amid social turmoil, including during emergencies.
