Former Baseball Player Im Hae-dong Ordered to Pay 800 Million Won to Kim Ha-seong
Im Hae-dong, a former baseball player under investigation for extortion, has been ordered by the Seoul High Court to pay 800 million won to Kim Ha-seong of the Atlanta Braves. This decision comes in light of a breach of settlement terms following a dispute between the two parties stemming from an incident of assault at a drinking establishment.
On the 23rd, the Civil Division 4 of the Seoul High Court, presided over by Judge Kim Woo-jin, dismissed Ims appeal against the ruling from the first instance, thus upholding the original verdict. The first ruling, made in August of last year, required Im to pay Kim 800 million won.
The relationship between the two men is that of senior and junior in the baseball community. After Kims move to the United States, it is reported that Im acted as his road manager. Their conflict began in February 2021 during a drinking session at a bar in Gangnam, Seoul, where a physical altercation occurred. Im demanded a settlement payment from Kim, who was then serving in the military.
Kim eventually agreed to pay 400 million won as a settlement, under the condition that he would not contact Im directly or indirectly, nor act in a way that could cause harm to him. However, after Im continued to reach out to Kim, he filed a criminal complaint against him for extortion at the end of 2023, leading to a civil lawsuit for breach of contract.
The prosecution has been investigating the case since receiving it from the police last July, focusing on charges of extortion and attempted extortion. The police had previously applied for arrest warrants for Im on two occasions, but both were rejected by the court, which cited the need for the exercise of defense rights.
Im Hae-dong joined the Nexen Heroes (now Kiwoom) as a pitcher in 2015 but did not make his debut in the first team and left the team the following year. Major leaguer Kim Ha-seong recently transferred from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Atlanta Braves during the season.
