K-Popd: A Global Music Competition Show Debuts on Apple TV+

K-Popd, a new global music competition series, premiered on Apple TV+ on the 29th. This show, co-produced by Apple TV+, CJ ENM, and Australian production company Eureka, has been described as a format where famous pop songs are rearranged in K-Pop style and presented for audience evaluation. However, the shows director, PD Lee Yeon-kyu, avoided discussing this aspect in detail.
The concept of K-Popd revolves around top-tier K-Pop artists teaming up with international pop stars to reinterpret each others hit songs on stage. The producers highlighted that the most exciting part of the show is the moments when artists from different cultural backgrounds connect and interact on stage.
K-Popd promises an unprecedented visual experience featuring renowned K-Pop groups and legendary international artists. Some notable collaborations include Megan Thee Stallion with Billie, the Spice Girls with ITZY, Taylor Dayne with Kep1er, TLC with STAYC, Kesha with JO1, and Kylie Minogue with ATEEZ, generating significant buzz among fans.
Director Lee Yeon-kyu shared that the idea for the program originated back in 2021. He explained, "We started thinking about how we could connect people around the world through the power of music." He also pointed out the unique challenge of bringing international pop artists to Seoul to complete their work within just 48 hours. "Instead of focusing on cultural clashes, the real challenge was to finish everything on time, especially aligning our movements. Everyone was professional, and we completed it perfectly," he stated.
Reflecting on the evolution of K-Pop, Lee remarked, "In the past, I thought K-Pop was a minor genre. But recently, I realized that music can connect and foster love across cultures. I am grateful for that."
K-Popd is set to showcase not only the talents of K-Pop artists but also the potential for cross-cultural collaboration in music, making it a series to watch for fans of both K-Pop and global pop music.
