Samsung Develops AI Modem Chip Targeting SpaceX for Satellite Communication

Samsung Electronics is reportedly developing an artificial intelligence (AI) modem chip aimed at satellite communication, specifically targeting SpaceX. A key executive from Samsungs semiconductor (DS) division recently met with SpaceX to share information about the chip and its development status. This innovative semiconductor is designed to directly connect low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites with terminals, potentially shaking the foundations of the traditional communication industry, which usually requires ground base stations for operations. The market for this technology is expected to grow to approximately 740 trillion won by 2040.
Analysts suggest that Samsung is accelerating its efforts to proactively enter the supply chain being established by SpaceX. According to independent reports obtained by the Korea Economic Daily, Samsungs System LSI division is developing the Exynos Modem, equipped with an AI accelerator (NPU). The existing chips have clear limitations when it comes to connecting ground terminals directly to the nearly 10,000 LEO satellites launched by SpaceX. To maximize signal connectivity and predict the movements of satellites and the conditions of communication beams in real-time, AI capabilities are essential.
It is reported that Samsungs Exynos modem demonstrates a remarkable improvement over existing products, achieving 55 times better communication beam identification and 42 times better channel prediction and decision-making capabilities.
Samsungs primary target customer for this modem is SpaceX, which operates the Starlink satellite internet service. An informed source mentioned that discussions between the two companies have already begun as they aim to enter the supply chain for SpaceXs sixth-generation (6G) non-terrestrial network (NTN) components. The 6G NTN is essential for applications like autonomous driving and humanoid robots, which require uninterrupted connectivity even for a fraction of a second.
The relationship between Samsung Electronics and Tesla is deepening as both companies explore synergies in technology and infrastructure. As Elon Musks ventures continue to innovate, Samsungs strategic move into the satellite communication space could mark a significant milestone in the evolution of telecommunications.
