Anthropic Secures Up to 1 Million Google TPUs to Diversify Cloud Infrastructure
Anthropic, a global artificial intelligence (AI) company considered a competitor to OpenAI, has announced plans to adopt up to 1 million of Googles Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to reduce its reliance on NVIDIAs Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). This strategic move is part of Anthropics broader cloud infrastructure diversification strategy. The company also plans to open its first office in South Korea early next year to expand its business-to-business (B2B) market outreach.
On the 23rd (local time), Anthropic stated, "We will expand the application of Google Cloud technologies, including up to 1 million TPUs, and we expect to operate well over 1 gigawatt (GW) of capacity next year." TPUs are specialized chips developed by Google for AI and machine learning tasks. Industry estimates suggest that the cost of building a 1GW data center is around $50 billion, with approximately $35 billion allocated for AI chips. Anthropic has not disclosed its funding methods for this initiative.
Anthropic boasts a global customer base of over 300,000 companies. According to the company, the number of large clients generating annual revenues of over $100,000 has increased sevenfold compared to last year. This year’s estimated annual revenue is expected to reach $7 billion. In South Korea, Anthropic serves clients such as SK Telecom, AI chatbot service provider RYUTEN, and legal AI firm Law & Company.
This collaboration is part of the ongoing "infrastructure acquisition war" that has recently become a focal point in the AI industry and aligns with Anthropics multi-cloud strategy. Until now, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been Anthropics primary cloud partner, with Amazon investing a cumulative $8 billion in the company.
The move to secure TPUs marks a significant step for Anthropic as it seeks to enhance its computational capabilities while reducing dependency on traditional GPU resources.
